Where Is G-D in Megilat Esther  .: Viewed: 1538 times :.
The Rambam states in Hilchos Megilah, Chapter 2, Halacha 18, that all books of the Prophets and all of the Holy Writings will be cancelled in the Messianic Era except for Megilat Esther, which will exist forever like the Torah and the Talmud. What’s even stranger is that Esther is the only book in TANACH without G-d’s name in it. Why is the only book in Holy Scripture (Ketuvim)...

Why Are The Aron's Dimensions Fractured?  .: Viewed: 1627 times :.
All the vessels in the Mishkan had measurements in whole Amot/1 Amah (Approximately 2 feet), 2 Amot or 10 Amot, etc. The Aron that contained the LUCHOT (The Two Tablets) was the exception to this. All of its measurements were incomplete and fractured Amot. Its length was 2 and a half Amot, its width, 1 and a half Amot, and its height, 1 and a half Amot. What is the reason for this? Surely the...

Why Avraham Prays for Sodom but Rejects His Own Nephew  .: Viewed: 2270 times :.
The Torah states, Avraham approached and said, "Will You also destroy the righteous along with the wicked?" (Bereshis 18:23) Avraham's love for all people is exemplified in its noblest form as he intercedes and prays on behalf of the people of Sodom. Even the wicked Sodomites were worthy of his sympathy and compassion. He prayed to G-d to spare them from impending doom and destruction....

Why Celebrate Judgement?  .: Viewed: 1735 times :.
Rosh HaShana is a puzzling Yom Tov for us. On the one hand, we are facing an awesome judgment; on the other hand, we celebrate the day as a joyous holiday. One can hardly imagine someone facing a life and death judgment enjoying himself on that very day. Yet, the Halacha states that we must celebrate on Rosh HaShana by feasting on meat and wine. What is even stranger, we not only celebrate...

 Why Did G-D Harden Pharaoh's Heart?  .: Viewed: 1705 times :.
Why did G-D need to harden Pharaoh's heart? Why was there a need for the Ten Plagues? Why couldn't G-D bring about the Exodus by having Pharaoh come to the realization that it was to his benefit to get rid of his Hebrew slaves? Hadn't Pharaoh expressed his fears that in the event of war, the Hebrew nation would join our enemies and wage war against us (Shemot 1:10)? If he was so afraid that...

Why Dim Pesach's Joy with Yizkor?  .: Viewed: 1825 times :.
On each of the last days of the Shalosh Regalim, it is the Ashkenazi tradition that Yizkor be recited. It seems strange and paradoxical that a service of mourning and tears be included in the ritual of our joyous Festivals. Yom Kippur is an appropriate day for the Yizkor service. The serious mood of the Day of Atonement and the emotions of guilt, evoked by Yizkor, blend well together. So how...

Why Do We Cry?  .: Viewed: 1579 times :.
We have all cried – sometimes from joy, more often from sorrow. Why do we express both opposite emotions in the exact same way? Why is G-d, usually so generous with the wondrous resources with which He has endowed us, so restricting in this respect? Was there not some way to differentiate more clearly between joy and sorrow? On a physiological level, the encyclopedia informs us,...

Why Do We Dream?  .: Viewed: 1643 times :.
There was a popular song called “Life is but a Dream”. The Mishnah in Avot states, “One moment of pleasure in the After-Life is better than all of life in this world”. How can we have confidence that another world awaits us after death? The answer is dreams! Have you ever had a dream that was so vivid, that you experienced it as if it were reality, but then you...

Why Does Psalm 79 Sing about the Temple's Destruction  .: Viewed: 2392 times :.
Was the act of the Churban Beit Hamikdash (the Destruction of the Temple) a totally negative event or really a hidden positive one? Tehillim Chapter 79 holds the answer. This Tehillim deals with the gruesome details of the Temple's Destruction, and yet it begins with the words, "A song to Asaf". The Talmud in Kiddushin 31b asks that it would have been more appropriate to start with the words,...

Why does Yirmiyahu refer to Tisha B’Av as a Festival?  .: Viewed: 1321 times :.
On Tisha B'Av we mourn for the destruction of the first and second Holy Temples. The Talmud in Trachtate Taanit (p. 30) states that all Mitzvot that apply to a mourner during the Shiva also apply to the entire Jewish people on Tisha B'Av. In other words, according to Halacha we are all sitting Shiva on Tisha B'Av. But, how can this be? For the Halacha states that if a close relative has...

Why G-d Chose Moshe as Redeemer and Giver of the Torah  .: Viewed: 2365 times :.
Rabbenu Bachye regards the burning bush as a revelation that our nation, despite its hardships, is eternal. “The burning bush conjures up the image of a lowly nation in iron chains, constantly aflame with suffering. Threatened on all sides and against all odds, the Jewish People continue to survive miraculously among their enemies.” This interpretation is found in Midrash Shemot,...

Why Get "Fired Up" On Lag BaOmer?  .: Viewed: 1825 times :.
The Doors had a hit song called, "Light My Fire". Were they singing about Lag BaOmer? Why does everyone in Israel get so "fired up" on Lag BaOmer? There are two main historical events connected to Lag BaOmer. Firs, the Talmud Yevamot 62 states that during the time of Rabbi Akiva, 24,000 of his students died from a Divinely sent plague during the days of the counting of the Omer between Pesach...

Why does the groom place an opaque veil over his bride's face? The father of the first Jewish family, Yaakov, was the victim of a last minute switch on his wedding night. His father-in-law, Lavan, substituted Leah, the older of his two daughters, for Rachel, the one whom Yaakov loved and worked for. Yaakov discovered the deception only after he had consummated the marriage with Leah....

Why Is The Torah Split Into 5 Books  .: Viewed: 1949 times :.
Why does the Torah consist of 5 books? We can infer form the Zohar that the 5 books of the Torah correspond to the 5 levels of the human soul. These levels of the soul are 1) Nefesh 2) Ruach 3) Neshama 4) Chaya 5) Yechida. In the womb, the Divine Soul is called Nefesh from the root Nofesh, resting, because before birth the soul has not yet been activated. At birth, the soul is called Ruach...

Why Mashiach Descends from Immaculate DECEPTION  .: Viewed: 1944 times :.
How can we understand the fact that our Mashiach, King David descends from sullied and problematic lineage? His paternal ancestors, including his great grandfather Boaz, were the result of an act of incest between Yehuda and his daughter-in-law Tamar. She deceived Yehuda by posing as a harlot in order to have his child. Yet Yehuda is the father of the tribe from whom the Mashiach will emerge...
