In his revolt against the authority of Moses and Aaron, Korach was supported by Dathan and Abiram and by On, the son of Peleth.  The opening verse of this sidra is the only place where On ben Peleth is mentioned; and his name does not occur in the more detailed narrative that follows.  Noting the absence of the name from the subsequent account, the Talmud states, that On, the son of Peleth,...

When the SHEMITA year 5775 concludes, SHEMITAT KESAFIM takes effect, and all outstanding loans are cancelled. The Shulchan Aruch in Choshen Mishpat 67 rules that SHEMITAT KESAFIM (release of loans) applies also outside the Land of Israel. Thus, the Shemita year cancels all financial debts. If someone owes you money, and he comes to repay it to you after the Shemita year, you are supposed to...

Rashi in Parshat Chukat quotes a Midrash that explains that the Red Heifer is a tikun for the Sin of the Golden Calf. "To what can this be likened? To a maid that worked in the palace of the king. One day her child came and soiled the palace with his filth. The king said: 'Let the mother come and clean up her child's filth.'" This is the concept of atonement for the golden calf, for the Holy...

"Yosef's brothers raised their eyes and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilad, and their camels were carrying sweet spices, and perfume." (Bereshit 37) Rashi asks why does the Torah gives us this seemingly needless information. Why do we need to know what the Ismaelites were carrying? Rashi explains that usually, Arab caravans transported petroleum and other foul-smelling...

The Kabbalistic Secret Of Sefiras Ha-Omer  .: Viewed: 2702 times :.
When did Judaism begin? The beginning was in two stages: A) the Exodus from Egypt - 'Yetzias Mitzraim', for which we celebrate Pesach; followed 50 days later by B) the Giving of the Torah - Matan Torah (Revelation at Sinai), for which we celebrate 'Shevuos'; together forming the foundation and establishment of the Jewish people as a nation (see Ex. 19:56; Deut. 26:16-19). This was best...

The Key to Spiritual Growth  .: Viewed: 1730 times :.
There's a strange verse in Bamidbar 21:27, "Therefore the MOSHLIM (poets) would say,' Come to Cheshbon; let it be rebuilt and established as the city of Sichon.' " The Ramban explains that this poem is quoted as proof that Cheshbon had become a city of Sichon. After Sichon's victory, let Chesbon be rebuilt as the capital city of Sichon after it was destroyed in battle. The Torah is not...

The last of the 613 Mitzvot is, “And now, write for yourselves this song, teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths”…(Devarim 31:19). According to Sanhedrin 21b this verse teaches that it is a Mitzva for every Jewish Person to write a Sefer Torah for himself. Why is the Torah referred to by the unusual term “song”? There is no other Mitzva...

“By the mouth of G-d they encamped, and by the mouth of G-d they traveled” (Bamidbar 9:23). The Jewish People never knew in advance how long they would be staying at an encampment in the wilderness. It could have been for a day or for even years. Nonetheless, we would set up the Mishkan at each encampment, following G-d’s instructions to keep the Mishkan functioning at all...

The Menora - Symbol of aTorah Jewish State  .: Viewed: 1910 times :.
The 6 branches of the Menora symbolize the 6 days of the week, and the center stem represents Shabbat. Just as the 6 lights of the Menora were all inclined toward the center light, so too all week we should remain mindful of Shabbat, which is the central focus of the weekdays. When I was growing up in Brooklyn, there was a bumper sticker on many cars which read, "Hang in there, Shabbat is...
