Love your Friend as Yourself - Really?  .: Viewed: 1702 times :.
This verse is one of the most mistranslated verses in the Torah. Can the Torah command something which is not humanly possible? Unlike other religions, that have fancy slogans not meant for the real world, Judaism is based on realty. Thus, Rav Soloveitchik explains that this is not what the Hebrew verse actually says. It is all about knowing where to place the comas. For example, I had a...

 G-D's Recycling Business  .: Viewed: 1694 times :.
The Zohar states that Eliyahu Hanavi was the Reincarnated soul of Pinchas, the grandson of Aharon the Kohen Gadol. Pinchas was the hero whose active zealotry saved the Jewish People from destruction by a deadly plague (Bamidbar 25). Is Reincarnation mentioned in TANACH?   The Ramban brings a proof text for Reincarnation from the book of Iyov. "Wow, all these wonders G-D does, 2 or 3...

The Shofar- Bookends of Jewish History  .: Viewed: 1693 times :.
The Shofar is a very basic, natural instrument which, according to Halacha, may not be adorned with gold and silver. Its purity and simplicity, both in terms of its form and the notes it sounds, cut through the noise and BALAGAN of today’s world, calling the Jewish People back to the Torah. The Shofar connects us to the key moments of Jewish History that define our destiny as a Holy...

Did Yosef Make His Daddy Into A Mummy?  .: Viewed: 1691 times :.
"And Yosef commanded the physicians to embalm his father." (Bereshit 50:2) The Malbim cannot comprehend Yosef's command that his father's body be embalmed, and declares that, "the purpose of the burial ceremony is to enable the dead person's body to turn to dust." Jewish burial rites reflect the immense difference between the body and the soul (Kohelet 12:7) describes our release from...

TZITZIT - A Tikun For the Sin of the Spies  .: Viewed: 1688 times :.
Parshat Shlach begins with the Sin of the Spies and ends with the Mitzva of TZITIT. Is there a link between the two? To answer this question we must ask another. What was the sin of the Spies?  It cannot be that the sin was the very fact that they were sent.  On the contrary,  we find the use of spies against the enemy camp in many places.  For example, it says,...

Pesach: Our Birthday Celebration  .: Viewed: 1688 times :.
The Beatles had a hit song called, "Today is Your Birthday". Were they singing about Israel on Pesach? The Mitzvah of relating the account of the Exodus is that the story should be told through questions and answers, it should be a dialogue and not a monologue. This is because the listeners at the Seder must become partners in telling the Exodus story. Included in this Mitzvah is that the...

The UN's Role In The Final  .: Viewed: 1672 times :.
The Exodus from Egypt is the prototype of the Final Redemption, which will occur with the coming of Mashiach. It too, like the Exodus, will take place without the benevolent assistance of the nations of the world, even those whom the Jewish People consider our friends and allies. When the great day of the Final Redemption will come, Klal Yisrael will owe thanks to no one, not even to President...

Why Mourn for a Temple We Never Saw?  .: Viewed: 1671 times :.
On Tisha B'Av we mourn for the destruction of the first and second Holy Temples. The Talmud in Trachtate Taanit (Page 30) states that all Mitzvot that apply to a mourner during the Shiva also apply to the entire Jewish people on Tisha B'Av. In other words, according to Halacha we are all sitting Shiva on Tisha B'Av. But, how can this be? For the Halacha states that if a close relative has...

A WORD TO THE WISE  .: Viewed: 1656 times :.
“See, G‑d has proclaimed Bezalel by name…he filled him with G‑dly spirit, with wisdom, insight, and understanding.” (Shmot 35:30-31) Bezalel, the master architect of the Mishkan, was endowed with exceptional wisdom and knowledge necessary to make a dwelling place for G‑d’s Shechinah. Midrash Tanchuma comments that Bezalel already had possessed great wisdom before he...

 Rivka's AYIN TOVA  .: Viewed: 1650 times :.
Both Yaakov Avinu and Moshe Rabeinu found their spouses at a BE’ER (a well). Eliezer, Avraham’s servant, also met Rivka, Yitzchak’s future wife, at a well. At that event, the Torah first calls the well a BE’ER (Bereshis 24:11). However, in Bereshis 24:42 the Torah calls the well where Eliezer met Rivka AYIN. Why the switch? The Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim informs us...

Why Do We Dream?  .: Viewed: 1643 times :.
There was a popular song called “Life is but a Dream”. The Mishnah in Avot states, “One moment of pleasure in the After-Life is better than all of life in this world”. How can we have confidence that another world awaits us after death? The answer is dreams! Have you ever had a dream that was so vivid, that you experienced it as if it were reality, but then you...

INGRATITUDE – The Source of all Sins  .: Viewed: 1643 times :.
R’ Bachye and the Sefer Hahinuch both state that expressing appreciation and gratitude (Hakarat Hatov) is the essence and foundation of Judaism, and ingratitude is the source of all sins. In fact, the Midrash in Vayikra Rabba 9 states, "Derech Eretz kadma laTorah", which means, "Courtesy, decency, and concern for others precede the Torah." Thus, how do we explain the death threats sent...

Is the Temple Mount Truly in Our Hands?  .: Viewed: 1638 times :.
As we approach Yom Yerushalayim, we remember G-d’s incredible miracle, encapsuled in that magic moment when IDF General Motta Gur uttered those wondrous words, “The Temple Mount is in our hands.” Since the Six Day War, the Halachic question arose whether it is permitted for Jews to ascend the Temple Mount. This may seem like only a Halachic question, but it has far reaching...

Why Are The Aron's Dimensions Fractured?  .: Viewed: 1630 times :.
All the vessels in the Mishkan had measurements in whole Amot/1 Amah (Approximately 2 feet), 2 Amot or 10 Amot, etc. The Aron that contained the LUCHOT (The Two Tablets) was the exception to this. All of its measurements were incomplete and fractured Amot. Its length was 2 and a half Amot, its width, 1 and a half Amot, and its height, 1 and a half Amot. What is the reason for this? Surely the...
