How To Manage Our Anger  .: Viewed: 2184 times :.
Of all the abilities that human beings possess, perhaps none is as mysterious as our talent for compartmentalization. Each of us is multiple people, and different ones emerge in different circumstances and relationships. If we can never fully know somebody, it's not simply because his exterior does not match his interior. It's because we have so many chambers inside, and some are more hidden...

Written In Stone!  .: Viewed: 2184 times :.
Parshat Eikev states, “At that time G-d said to me, carve out two tablets of stone like the first…. And I (G-d) will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets…  And I put the tablets in the Ark which I made.” (D’varim 10) Rav S.R. Hirsch notes that whenever the Torah discusses the LUCHOT – TABLETS, it mentions the material,...

The Link between Pinchas and Eliyahu Hanavi  .: Viewed: 2182 times :.
The Zohar says that Eliyahu Hanavi was the Reincarnated soul of Pinchas, the grandson of Aharon, the High Priest. Pinchas was the hero whose act of Zealotry saved the Jewish People from destruction by a deadly plague (Bamidbar 25). Is Reincarnation mentioned in TANACH (The Bible)? The Ramban and other Kabbalists state that the Book of Ruth teaches the doctrine of Reincarnation (Gilgul...

Finding The Lost Keys of The Mikdash  .: Viewed: 2179 times :.
4 days a year we fast and mourn, commemorating different historical events of the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash. The 17th day of Tammuz is one of the 4 days, and it began a 3 week period of limited mourning that climaxes with Tisha B'Av, the day of the destruction of both Temples. Consistent with Judaism's optimism, the Biblical references about these 4 days, including Tisha B'Av, are NOT...

Mordecai – The Proud, Unique Jew  .: Viewed: 2177 times :.
Why does the Megilah say, "A Jewish man was in the capital of Shushan, and his name was Mordecai", when there were many Jews living in Shushan at that time? The commentators on the Megillah explain that many Jews fled Shushan for fear of Haman, Mordecai was one of the few who did not. Rabbi Yonasan Eibeschutz disagrees with this interpretation. As we see, later on in the Megilah, Esther...

 Incense-The Love Knot of G-d And Israel  .: Viewed: 2176 times :.
The Midrash Tanchuma states that the incense offering K'TORET, was the most exalted Service in the Mikdash. The incense offering was composed of 11 ingredients and one of them had a bad odor. The inclusion of a foul-smelling spice in the Incense, symbolizes the idea that all Jews must unite together in prayer, the righteous and the sinner alike (Keritot 6). We should not discriminate against...

What Miracle Do We Celebrate On Chanuka?  .: Viewed: 2176 times :.
The motto of Chanuka, ""NES GADOL HAYA PO" (a great miracle occurred here) makes us think of the one day supply of oil that burned for 8 days. It is striking that the Chanuka liturgy omits mention of this miracle entirely. The AL HANISIM addition to the prayers and even the paragraph HANEROS HALALU (these candles) introducing the lighting of the Menorah, express praise and thanks to G-D...

Serving G-d in Joy Despite the Terror  .: Viewed: 2172 times :.
King David tells us in Tehillim 100, "Serve G-d with joy." How is it possible when we are surrounded by brutal Arab terrorists and savage murderers? Rambam provides the solution --- the Fear of G-d. When someone fears G-d, he serves Him in joy.  As it says, "Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright of heart." (Tehillim 97:11)  A person derives happiness ...

The "Patience" of Slavery  .: Viewed: 2170 times :.
The Hagada says, "In every generation a person is obligated to see himself as if he had personally been liberated from Egypt." How do I personally make the transition from slavery to freedom when I was never a slave? Every person is, in a sense, born a slave – to ignorance, to lust, to passion, and to selfishness. Our task is to free ourselves from our personal, spiritual slavery to the...

The Evil Gives Proof of the Coming Good  .: Viewed: 2166 times :.
King David tells us in Tehillim 100, “to serve G-d with joy.” The Mishna in Avot 1 tells us that we should “greet and welcome everyone with a joyful countenance”. Avot D’Rabbi Natan 13 states that a happy and pleasant facial expression is considered equal to giving a person the most treasured gift in the world. How is it possible to be in a joyful mood when we...

 Yom Kippur's Magic Moment  .: Viewed: 2165 times :.
Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook draws our attention to a strange phrase at the end of the Al Chet confession, which is said on Yom Kippur. "My G-D, before I was formed I was of no worth, and now that I have been formed, it is as if I was not formed." Rav Kook explains that the first part of this confession is easy to understand. Before I was formed I was obviously of no worth, since I did not yet...

The Sin of Lashon Hara - A Chillul Hashem  .: Viewed: 2164 times :.
The Torah states in Parshat Emor “You shall not desecrate My Holy Name” (Vayikra 22:32). This verse is the source for the sin of Chillul Hashem, which is one of the most serious sins that a Jew can commit, and for which it is extremely difficult to do tshuvah (Yuma 86a). A little known aspect of Chillul Hashem is when a person habitually speaks or listens to lashon hara. The...

The Torah states in Parshat Behaaloscha “The man Moshe was exceedingly humble, more than any other person on the face of the earth.” (Bamidbar 12:3) Rashi defines the word ענו as humble, patient, and tolerant.  The Torah's Definition of Humility  .: Viewed: 2156 times :.
What is the definition of humility? The English Dictionary defines humility as, having a low self esteem of one's own importance. But Rav Yaakov Kaminetzky says to understand the Torah's definition of humility, we have to look at Moshe Rabbenu, who is described in Bamidbar 12, as exceedingly humble, more than any other person. But in Parashat Korach, Moshe's leadership is challenged by his...
